City Offers Utility Tax Rebate
For seniors and disabled residents who qualify
The City of Covington continues to offer the Utility Tax Rebate Program for low income seniors and disabled residents. To see if you or someone you know qualifies, visit the City's Web site www.ci.covington.wa.us and click on "Utility Tax Rebate Information".
Applications are due no later than April 30, 2010. Information,
requirements and forms are also available at the front desk in City Hall or call 253) 638-1110 with questions.

Free Blood Pressure and Glucose Screenings at City Hall
February is heart health month!
Starting Wednesday, February 10, fire fighters from station 78 in Covington will set-up shop at the Community Room in City Hall to provide heart healthy screenings for anyone.
The City encourages residents, staff, and employees in the surrounding areas to utilize these free screenings. Since February is heart health month - why not give your Valentine piece of mind.
These free screenings are available on Wednesday,Feb 10, Tuesday, Feb. 16 and Tuesday, Feb. 23. from 9-11 a.m. each day. Participants may utilize all three weeks to see if any changes in blood pressure or glucose levels exist.

City Accepting Applications for a Replacement Position on the Planning Commission

The City of Covington is accepting applications for one replacement position on the Covington Planning Commission. This position is open to an adult living or working within Covington City limits serving the balance of a four-year term to expire August 31, 2013. The Planning Commission meets the first and third Thursdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Covington City Hall.
The purpose of the Planning Commission is to direct the preparation of a Comprehensive Plan and Development Regulations in compliance with Chapters 35A.63 and 36.70A RCW. This includes establishing procedures providing for early and continuous public participation in the development and amendment of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan for the City and the Development Regulations implementing the plan and make recommendations concerning these matters to the City Council. The Planning Commission shall review land use management, shoreline management and environmental protection ordinances and regulations of the City and make recommendations regarding them to the City Council. The Planning Commission shall review potential annexations to the City as requested by the City Council, and make recommendations concerning them. Where design review is required by land use ordinances of the City, the Planning Commission shall perform such design review, unless that review is delegated to some other appointed body or staff. The Planning Commission shall recommend, establish priorities for, and review studies of geographic sub-areas in the City. The Planning Commission shall submit written periodic reports to the City Council, setting forth its progress in completing its work program for the current fiscal year. The chairperson of the Planning Commission or designee is encouraged to regularly present updates to the City Council. The Planning Commission may hold public hearings in the exercise of its duties and responsibilities as it deems necessary.

The City of Covington is still accepting applications for one replacement position on the Covington Arts Commission. This position is open to an adult or youth living or working within Covington City limits serving the balance of a three-year term to expire December 31, 2010. The Arts Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Covington City Hall.
The purpose of the Arts Commission is to act in an advisory capacity to the City Council and provide leadership in the arts. The Arts Commission may perform the following functions: 1. Keep the City Council informed and represent community interest in matters of art. 2. Serve as the central commission to whom individuals and groups may bring their concerns and ideas with regard to the arts. 3. Seek to enlarge the art consciousness of Covington. 4. Encourage multi-age working, sharing, learning and teaching in the arts. 5. Provide recognition and encouragement to local artists, art activities and capital improvements for the arts in Covington. 6. Explore financing for acquisition of art objects, art activities and capital improvements for the arts in Covington. 7. Establish a long-range plan for the development and operation of a cultural center. 8. Preparation of a public involvement program that solicits volunteer support and encourages public participation in the implementation and operation of Covington's park system. 9. Develop, implement and review a comprehensive community arts program and annual work plan. 10. Present monthly commission meeting reports to the City Council. 11. Review the suitability of any work of art intended as a gift to the City. 12. Such other and further responsibilities as may be assigned to the Commission by the City Council, from time to time.

Hours Change at Permit Counter and for Building Inspections
Effective January 1, 2010
Due to staff reductions at the City, Permit Counter and Building Inspection hours are changing.
Beginning on January 1, 2010, the Permit Counter will be open Mondays through Thursdays from 8 am to 5 pm; the Counter will be closed Fridays and holidays. We ask that you make appointments for Permit Counter service, whether you are submitting a permit application or asking for help with zoning or building code questions. This will assure that the specific staff members you need are available to help you.
Building Inspection hours will now be from 8 a.m.-noon, Mondays through Thursday; inspections will not be available on Fridays, weekends or holidays.
We will continue to provide you with the high quality service you have come to expect, but on a reduced schedule.
